Time Out Cover

Yet again too long a gap between posts but I have a new years resolution on the way so I’m going to get going on regular posts!! I’m going to start with this cover I just shot with Bill Turpin (see his site linked on the right) and Nick Booth, AD at Time Out. They came to me with a really strong concept and I think the shot looked great. Massive thanks to all that worked on it, including Nevs and Castweb for coming up trumps with our really specific model request! Also nice to see it on coverjunkie too

Award Nomination

Found out that an ad I worked on for the election last year has been nominated for an ANNA, the Awards for National Newspaper Advertising. Unfortunately, I don’t get a credit in the book, but I thought I should give it a mention on here. The ad was shot with Tim Peckett at Draft FCB and I think it works really well.

Daisy Cooper

Whilst Miranda has been hard at work fighting for my next campaign to shoot, I have been working with a dear photographer friend of mine called Emma Shervington. We are starting a photographic collective under the guise of Daisy Cooper and one of our first images, ‘cat and mouse’ is below.

Emma is great to work with and I am expecting great things from this collaboration. More images to follow

Saucy Images

A quick preview of some new work. A nice blend of in camera techniques and post production. Apart from the colours in the sauce this was all shot in one. The base of the bottle was carefully removed so that the sauce could be pushed though with the control to get just the right amount coming out. Add some light, shade and just the right shutter speed to get a little bit of movement in the drop of sauce and its done.

Shooting in London at night

Its been a while since I’ve had a chance to sit down in front of my blog but here I am. I’ve had a few projects on the go recently which I can talk about when they come out but one of the jobs I really enjoyed was a recent shoot for Mercedes. The car was the new Mercedes S-Class which is thier technological flagship and it had the gadgets to prove it. The point is that it is a luxury car and the picture had to say that plus, they wanted to shoot it at night to keep the look modern enough to say how advanced it is. Shooting at night is one of my very favourite things and add the fact that I was doing it in my favouite city made it a special event. With this particular shot I want to use only the light that was available to me on the night which is always difficult to balance all of the different colour temperatures. It also means longer exposures and shooting the picture in a few different elements whilst aiming to get most of the shot in one key exposure. We spent ages finding the right locations with enough light at night that also had the right feel and message for the car, and I think we got it. This is my Favourite shot from the night.

Open House in London

We’ve just had Open House in London and my studio is on the site of one of the many places involved. Open House, the organisation, organise weekends where properties and areas of arcitecural intrest are opened up to the general public, have a look at thier website http://www.openhouse.org.uk/index.html. My studio is in Trinity Buoy Wharf in East London. It is the home of London’s only Lighthouse, the famous container city where I had my first office. TBW as us wharfers know it, used for buoy manufacturing is now a growing and exciting artists community. My studio is in one of the old buildings called the proving house, where the chains were tested. The wharf is home to a great 1940′s american diner called Fatboys where we often go to re-charge the creative batteries. Most impressively though is the Chain and Buoy Store. A classic old London wharf building with the light house on the top, it has so much character and charm and really makes this place special. I have a couple of images that I took for an exhibition marking the  10th year of the creative initiatve on Trinity Buoy Wharf.

I’ve taken a slight change in direction with my work, concentrating more heavily on still life projects. So, even though it’s not a big change, it has been massively improved and loads more pictures added. So if you want  to take a look at www.bigsouthernjesse.com.

Big pink Sparkley Helmet

I’ve just finnished another project with Bill Turpin. He made a one off police helmet for an exhibition to be held this month and he asked me to shoot an image of it. I’m really pleased with the result. It wasn’t all that easy to light the sparkles and have them look right. Anyhow, a bit of clever lighting and some post production and I think its a great picture.

Flying High with Czechsport Aircraft

I’ve just finished doing some work for Onega Aviation who are the UK distributors for Czechsport aircraft. This was a really exciting project, working with some great guys. The ads were for the SportCruiser light aircraft, which seems very impressive to me. Best of all it saw my first taste of aerial photography. We did a mixture of location shots, some on location in Trinity Buoy Wharf, some on location at Wycombe Airfield and some details in the studio. We also did a great shot with the help of Jim Webb from GLS lasers who projected the clouds across the studio!! Anyway I think between us all we produced some great ads with the best yet to come. Below are a few of the shots and the stuff that ran and thanks to all that helped.
